Karl A Spahlinger, Jr Scholarship Fund

PURPOSE
The Karl A Spahlinger, Jr. Scholarship Fund was established in 2015. Our mission is to provide financial assistance (up to $2500 per person) to individuals enrolled in community colleges, colleges, trade schools and universities in New York City.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
Scholarships are awarded on the basis of a comprehensive process, distributed annually. Scholarship funds are sent directly to the recipient’s school. The Karl A Spahlinger, Jr. Scholarships are awarded without regard to race, color, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation. Scholarships may be renewed provided funds are available and the award recipient meets the conditions outlined below in Scholarship Renewal.

CRITERIA
  •  Applicants must have permanent residence status in College Point, Queens (two forms of ID required) and be a citizen or legal permanent resident of the United States.
  • Applicants must be completing or have completed high school successfully with a minimum unweighted GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Applicants must be accepted as a full time student at a college, university, or trade school program for the upcoming academic semester. If scholarship money is awarded, this is the only program that will receive the funds on behalf of the applicant.
  • Applicants must demonstrate a need for financial assistance.
  • Preference may be given to applicants who are studying engineering or an animal-related field
  • Student must apply for the 2016-2017 Federal Student Aid Application (FAFSA) and submit a copy.
  • Student must submit a copy of their 2016-2017 Student Aid Report (SAR)
  • Applicants must complete and submit a Scholarship Application by April 20, 2016.

TIMELINE
  • Both new and renewal applications are due April 20, 2016.
  • If required, candidates eligible for interviews will be notified by the Scholarship Committee by May 2016.
  • Applicants will be notified (if awarded a scholarship) by June 30, 2016.

  3. If I live in college point, but I go to school in up-state NY, can I still apply? Thanks!

  4. Can you please give a list of some examples of ID that would be eligible to submit? I have a school ID but I do not have a state ID or driver's license or permit. Also, can you please clarify what you mean by references?

  5. A birth certificate, or social security card would work. Or one of the new NYC ID cards. But if you don't have a second form of identification right now, apply anyway and if you are awarded a scholarship we can figure it out.

  6. As far as references, a letter from a teacher or an employer or perhaps a coach would be good.
